What is breast reduction ?

Breast Reduction Surgery, also known as gigantomastia, is a problem that affects many women, in some cases it occurs from puberty, sometimes it appears after pregnancy and breastfeeding. Excessively large breasts often lead to back pain, make daily life difficult and can cause significant psychological discomfort. In addition, such breasts are much more prone to sagging with age due to the force of gravity. Fortunately, the above problems can be solved with the help of surgical breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty. This is an operation to simultaneously reduce and lift the breasts, during which it is also possible to correct asymmetries in breast size, change the position of the nipples and reduce the areolae.

Breast reduction – what does the procedure look like?

The procedure is carried out under general anaesthesia. The plastic surgeon makes skin incisions according to a previously created and accurate surgical drawing. Excess glandular tissue, fatty tissue and skin are then removed with precise technique. Once the tissues have been sutured, the surgical wound runs around the nipple-areola complex, vertically downwards and under the submammary fold, the breasts are reduced and lifted. It is necessary to use drains, which are removed a few days after surgery.

Breast reduction – how to proceed after the procedure?

Recovery time varies depending on the patient and the extent of the procedure performed, but is generally no longer than 2-3 weeks. It is usually advisable to wash and antisepticise the wounds daily, unless they are protected by specialised dressings, which will be removed by the surgeon during check-up. Sutures are absorbable or removed usually within ten days of surgery. You should not physically strain or exercise for one month after surgery, and you should also wear a special breast shaping bra throughout this time.
