Gynecomastia Surgery

Cosmetic surgery

Gynaecomastia is an overgrowth of the mammary gland in men. Physiologically, it can occur in newborns, boys at puberty and in elderly men. It is related to hormones which, during these periods, cause an enlargement of the glandular tissue, a small amount of which men naturally possess. Unfortunately, in some group of men, this gland does not disappear. This results in an accentuation of the nipples and an image of female breasts which can be hamstring. This causes a reluctance to take off their shirt at the gym or swimming pool, for example. In addition, 1 in 100 cases of breast cancer affects men and the occurrence of gynaecomastia on one side can be a symptom of the cancerous process.

Glandular tissue is not amenable to suction hence the failure of the liposuction treatments sometimes proposed. The only effective form of treatment is surgery. This procedure, despite its seemingly large extent, can be performed safely under local anaesthesia. The patient is conscious at all times, but apart from the brief moment of anaesthesia administration, does not feel any discomfort. The procedure itself is completely painless. During the operation, the entire breast gland is removed, leaving the fatty tissue, which guarantees the natural appearance of the breasts after the operation – too aggressive an excision could cause permanent deformation of the operated area. The best aesthetic results come from an incision at the lower pole of the areola. The resulting scar is virtually invisible after a few months. Usually, even with large primary excesses, the skin shrinks rapidly after surgery. However, some patients may require the remaining excess skin to be reduced after approx. 0.5 years. Such a treatment is a small, short procedure performed under local anaesthesia.

After the surgery, small drains are left in the wound until the next day to collect the blood and the rest of the anaesthetic fluid. The stitches are removed after about a week. After the procedure, it is advisable to wear a compression waistcoat and to limit physical exercise for about three weeks. In order to reduce tissue swelling, we use lymphatic taping which significantly speeds up recovery. After this period, you can fully return to sports activities and possible physical work.
