What is a mastopexy – a breast lift ?

The breasts, like other areas of the body, change over time. For some women, these changes occur slowly and are not too prominent, so they do not pose a serious problem; however, for others, breast sagging can cause significant psychological discomfort. Fortunately, these changes can be reversed with the help of mastopexy. A breast lift procedure also known as mastopexy is an operation to lift and create the correct shape for sagging breasts. Factors such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight change, the passage of time and gravity cause adverse changes in the appearance of the breasts. As the skin loses its elasticity the breast loses its shape and begins to droop.

Mastopexy – what does the procedure look like?

The procedure is usually performed under general anaesthesia, but in selected cases of less advanced drooping it is possible to perform a breast lift under local anaesthesia, sometimes with what is known as analgosedation. The operation aims to lift the breasts, improve their shape and also allows the size of the nipple areola to be reduced. The course of the surgical incisions varies depending on the surgical technique required in each case, sometimes a cut around the nipple-areola complex is sufficient, in more advanced cases it is also necessary to cut vertically or vertically and under the submammary fold. According to a previously created and accurate surgical drawing, the plastic surgeon removes the excess skin, moves upwards the nipple-areola complex and forms the new breast shape. Most often it is necessary to use drains, which are removed a few days after the operation.

Mastopexy – how to proceed after the procedure?

Recovery time varies depending on the patient and the extent of the procedure performed, but is generally no longer than 2-3 weeks. It is usually advisable to wash and antiseptic the wounds daily, unless they are protected by specialised dressings, which will be removed by the surgeon during follow-up. Sutures are usually removed within ten days of surgery. You should not physically strain or exercise for one month after surgery, and you should also wear a special breast shaping bra throughout this time.
