Labia majora atrophy is a reduction or atrophy of the fatty tissue in the subcutaneous layer of the labia majora. The main causes of this process are menopause, significant weight loss, ageing of the skin and subcutaneous tissue or autoimmune diseases. Atrophy of the greater labia very often increases the risk of vaginal infections or feelings of vaginal dryness. Atrophic tissues are more susceptible to irritation and trauma. Patients who are physically active, especially those involved in cycling, horse riding, complain of frequent abrasions of the skin of the labia majora, which are painful and discourage patients from further physical activity.
The effect of the treatment is immediate and noticeable by the patient and increases over the following 2 weeks, as water is absorbed into the tissues.
