Cyst Removal

Cosmetic surgery

Sebaceous Cyst are characteristic cysts that develop as a result of stagnant secretions within the hair follicles and sebaceous glands. Their appearance may also have a genetic basis or be the result of congenital abnormalities that originate in foetal development. Nodules of this type can appear virtually anywhere on the body, but are most common in hairy areas – the head. Self-removal, attempts to squeeze or extrude the lumps are absolutely prohibited. Home-made methods may lead to infection and unsightly scarring.

Removal of a Sebaceous Cyst – methods used

The most common method of removing a Sebaceous Cyst is a surgical procedure in which the cyst is cut out along with the capsule. The whole procedure is not complicated and is carried out under local anaesthetic. The procedure takes about 20 minutes.

Other ways to remove a cyst are by incising it with an electric scalpel or by laser treatment.

If a laser is used, the operation is bloodless and leaves no scars. The extreme precision of the device is also a great advantage of this method. The depth of cut can be planned down to tenths of a millimetre.

Thanks to the antiseptic properties of the laser, the wound heals very quickly, so that within a week there is no trace of the cyst.

The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic and takes about 15 minutes.

Another method for getting rid of cysts is cryosurgery – that is, freezing the lesion using liquid nitrogen.

The very low temperature (-196.5 degrees Celsius) causes a blockage of the small vessels. As a result of the procedure, the pathologically altered tissue separates from the healthy skin and falls off, and the wound is replaced by new tissue. The advantage of this method is that there is no bleeding and no scarring.

Cysts can also be eliminated using radiofrequency or electrocoagulation.

The first method is based on radio-thermolysis, i.e. attracting intercellular fluids to the skin surface and raising the pressure inside the abnormal cells. The effect is to remove the lesion and drain the treated tissues. The procedure is bloodless and completely safe.

Electrocoagulation, on the other hand, uses an electric current that coagulates proteins in the treated tissues through a thermal effect.
