Proctology
A hair cyst (pilonidal cyst) is a chronic inflammatory condition of the intergluteal cleft.
The cause of the condition is not precisely known. The most likely theory is that hair grows into the skin, leading to inflammation of the subcutaneous tissue and the formation of microabscesses. Over time, the inflammation spreads to the surrounding tissues. Inflammation is favoured by the physiological conditions in the gluteal area – heat, humidity, constricted air, presence of anaerobic bacteria, friction of the buttocks. Once the cyst is formed, additional fistulas often develop.
Symptoms of a hair cyst
In many cases, the condition is asymptomatic. Some patients develop leakage of serous contents from the mouth of the cyst over time. Prolonged leakage of contents and blockage of the cyst mouth can lead to infection and abscess formation. When this happens, symptoms such as swelling, pain, redness, itching, fever and an unpleasant odour in the area of the condition appear.
Hair cyst treatments at Diamond Clinic are performed by Dr Anna Trybull :
– Laser hair cyst ablation – (SiLaC) – a minimally invasive surgical method of clearing and closing a hair cyst without the need for tissue excision. The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia
-Classical hair cyst excision – undergone in hospital setting
